HELISKIWI
in NEW ZEALAND, the magic of powder snow down under
Ski the Tasman is as much a scenic experience as an amazing
day on skis. The first skiplanes in the world were developed
and tested on the Tasman Glacier during the 1950's. Even
today there is nowhere else on earth where a skiplane-based
adventure operates on a daily basis.
The day on the Tasman Glacier involves two immense ski runs,
each of 8 to 10 kilometres set amongst the backdrop of New
Zealand's highest and most glaciated peaks.
In small groups, each with a professional guide, you glide
through gentle bowls and down huge open slopes.
Up to 30 metres of snow a year falls along the Main Divide
at Aoraki/Mount Cook. The region is heavily glaciated, and
the largest of these slow-moving rivers of ice is the 27
Km long Tasman Glacier.
After the scenic flight into the mountains our first run
of the day begins at 2500 metres, taking us through gentle
bowls and open snowfields on the eastern side of the glacier.
The second begins after lunch at a different landing point,
high on the western side.
This time we explore the glacier's surreal ice forms and
glide between the towering seracs and icefalls. Accompanied
by your guide you will have the opportunity to take off
your skis and safely explore ice caves and other fantastic
ice features.
Unfortunately snowboards are not suitable for Ski the Tasman.
There is some traversing involved when moving through icefalls,
and the lower glacier is too flat for snowboards to glide.
Wilderness Heliskiing offers some of the world's most spectacular
and challenging snowriding terrain. Classic heliskiing at
its best!
Based at Aoraki/Mount Cook, this operation is for small
groups of discerning boarders and skiers. If you are looking
for thousands of metres of untouched, unspoiled snow and
a true wilderness experience, go no further.
Alpine Guides is the is the only company to offer heliskiing
within the boundaries of the Aoraki/Mount Cook National
Park.
Expect big vertical, dramatic peaks, and the kind of unspoiled
snow that you can only dream about. Chances are you could
be making tracks in runs that had never been touched before
1995!
